central texas wildflower - hummingbird mint

Do you know our lovely and tall Central Texas summer wildflower Giant Hyssop / Hummingbird Mint / Agastache foeniculum? We see it everywhere though it is almost gone now for the summer season. Hummingbird mint is cousin to and looks just like Agastache rugosa the principal herb in our Summer Heat/Summer Cold remedy. Its other cousin Herba Pogostemonis (we extract the fragrant patchouli oil from this one) is interchangeably used in our subject remedy. Herbalists debate which one is the preferred.

Agastache is a spicy and warm herb. We use the aerial part of the plant: branches, stems and leaves. Agastache harmonizes and clears the digestive and elimination quadrants, dissolving mucus, dampness and congestion. It stops nausea and vomiting and is an anti-fungal and anti-infective herb. It is the most effective herb for battling and eliminating a kind of cold we can get in the summer, especially if we live in the hot and humid. Which here in Central Texas we do. We call this summer syndrome a 'summer cold' or 'stomach flu'.

We get fever and chills, headache, chest tightness and pressure, the feeling of stomach fullness and/or pain, nausea, vomiting, borborygmus (gurgling / grumbling intestines), diarrhea. It may seem as if we have food poisoning but it isn't over quickly. It works its way through the system in days just like a cold or the flu.

The ‘magic’ formula is Huo Xiang Zheng Qi Tang which translates to Agastache Powder to Rectify (Set Right / Correct) Qi. It resolves externally-contracted summer-weather colds characterized by abdominal congestion and irregularities.

Since I already mentioned food poisoning, I can tell you this formula's modern application is excellent for that with only a dose or two necessary. The synergistic action of two formula herbs, Agastache Huo Xiang and Perilla Zi Su Ye counteract aerobic bacteria like salmonella. Huo Xiang Zheng Qi Tang is definitely a 'two for one' and a 'one' that you would be good to keep in your medicine cabinet.

Patients love to know what’s in their formulas. Here’s what’s in Huo Xiang Zheng Qi Tang:
